Charles E. “Shep” Sutton was born into a comfortable family setting in West Virginia during the early twenties, but which quickly dissolved into an early life of poverty and division brought about by the Great Depression. After struggling for years, and being passed around among various family members, he found he excelled in acting and communications, and built a productive life around those skills.

“Shep” entered the Navy in World War II where he often served as a first radioman aboard patrol bombing aircraft. He then carved out a career in the Cold War period with his communication and intelligence skills at various embassies and locales around the world. Following numerous years of employment in the U. S. government he worked on various radar and missile bases as a lead technician and field engineer.

“Shep” eventually returned to West Virginia where he contributed many years to working the giant radio-telescope at the Greenbank Observatory. In retirement he moved to the Shenandoah Valley near Harrisonburg and continues to this day to participate in community acting projects. Throughout his varied career, covered in great detail in this autobiographical sketch, “Shep” Sutton also encountered various romances and met his wife Martha, had one son, and eventually grandchildren.

In this book “Shep” is extremely open about his life, growing up in West Virginia, his time in the military, his various adventures during the Cold War, working at the observatory, his many friends, and his family. This is definitely the story of a man pitted against the odds who triumphed through hard work and perseverance.

A real down to earth book about an interesting author, who had a lot of intriguing experiences in his life, mixed with a good deal of humor.
